The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment process of 2016, meant to appoint thousands of teaching and non-teaching staff, has been condemned by India’s highest courts. The Supreme Court declared the entire process “vitiated and tainted beyond redemption,” leading to the cancellation of 25,753 appointments. Given the systemic corruption, the Court found it impossible to distinguish innocent candidates from those involved in illicit manipulation.

2. Identifying the “Tainted”: Transparency vs Incompleteness

Following the verdict, WBSSC released a list of 1,804 “tainted” teachers, whose appointments displayed irregularities—such as OMR tampering or rank manipulation. However, critics point out missing details like the specific subjects taught, levels of appointment (Classes IX–X vs XI–XII), or the exact nature of each offense . Adding to the confusion, initial estimates varied—with the state’s legal team citing around 1,900 ineligible candidates

The Calcutta High Court ordered that identified tainted candidates should be barred from the 2025 recruitment cycle, and even canceled applications from those already registered.

 WBSSC reaffirmed this stance in court, giving the Supreme Court a written assurance that no tainted candidate would appear on upcoming exam lists or admit cards

A renewed attempt by SSC and the West Bengal government to appeal the verdict failed. In August, the Supreme Court rejected all review petitions, reaffirming that the diploma of fairness couldn’t coexist with the deep-rooted corruption laid bare. The ruling allows untainted teachers to continue until December 31, 2025, while mandating a fresh recruitment to fill the vacancies

This scandal sparked a massive wave of teacher protests, including hunger strikes and sit-ins. As thousands saw their careers vanish overnight, the state government introduced a temporary relief scheme—granting monthly financial aid to affected Group C and D staff.  The Enforcement Directorate’s arrest of TMC legislator Jiban Krishna Saha further intensified the political heat around the case
